Sustainable Futures

Summary of Projects and Clients

Strategic Planning - towns and surrounding rural areas

We have completed several town and rural regeneration projects producing long-term strategic plans covering the social, economic, environmental and cultural futures of their towns and surrounding rural areas. At the core of this work is the constructive and innovative involvement of local people, businesses and organisations. Commissions by The Market and Coastal Towns Association, South West RDA, Devon County Council and District Councils in Somerset, Devon & Cornwall

We worked with Exeter University’s Centre for Rural Policy and Research to develop a strategic plan for a large-scale Countryside Character Area. This involved engaging diverse stakeholders many of whom are considered to be in hard to reach groups. Commissioned by The Countryside Agency

Piloting best practice in participation and consultation

We facilitated the sharing of knowledge, experience and ‘know how’ between agencies, local authorities and communities, land managers and farmers in river catchment management. The project included producing a best practice guidance resource on the principles of participation in river catchment management for the Environment Agency. Commissioned by The Environment Agency and European Union INTERREG IIB Project.

Town Design Statement

Sustainable Futures worked with Land Use Consultants to facilitate a community led Town Design Statement in Stratford-upon-Avon. The work contributed to the development of Town Design Statement guidance. Commissioned by Land Use Consultants and Stratford-upon-Avon District Council.

Building Schools for the future

We worked with the City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council to design and facilitate a large-scale visioning Event that guided Bradford District’s Vision for Education and Training. Participants were drawn from diverse communities and ethnic groups and included primary and secondary school staff and students, FE colleges, parents, employers and learners of all ages. A number of the participants were from ‘hard to reach’ groups. Commissioned by Bradford Metropolitan District Council.

School Transport Plans

Sustainable Futures worked with Halcrow, three Hampshire schools, the County and District Councils to produce a commonly owed and agreed transport plan The Plan was required to support a planning application for a new secondary school and involved a series of decision making workshops including a workshop for school pupils.
